Talking about Extra Care in Cornwall

This website is temporarily supporting the recent community engagement initiative about plans to develop Extra Care Housing in Bodmin. This engagement was commissioned by Cornwall Council to share their plans to develop more specialist housing for older people who need care across the County.

The engagement took place between March and June 2019 and the report of the engagement can be downloaded here

We have talked to local community stakeholders and residents to help us to assess demand and to get feedback and input into the planning and development phases. This will help us to ensure that communities get the specific solutions they need.

The particular model of housing is called Extra Care and you can find out all about Extra Care here on this website. The objective of the community engagement was to let people know what the Council is planning to do and to listen to the various views, ideas and suggestions about these plans.

Cornwall Council is committed to ensuring that Cornwall's older and disabled people have access to high quality, sustainable and affordable homes together with high quality care services to meet their individual needs.  The aim is to provide appropriate housing together with the care and support that will enable people in later life to stay independent, happy and safe for longer.

Cornwall has a growing and ageing demographic and approximately 25% of the county's population will be over 64 by 2020.  The Council identified a long-term strategic requirement for quality facilities to meet the changing needs of our residents.  Part of the Council's long-term strategic approach is to replace traditional care service responses and reduce the number of people being placed into residential care through the provision of significantly more Extra Care housing.  Extra Care provision aims to support residents within their own homes for longer and reduce the burden on residential care. Council research indicates that Cornwall will need an additional 3.535 units of Extra Care by 2025 across our towns and cities.

This is a significant undertaking, but it is one that that is being addressed head on via a multi - initiative approach. One new initiative is to work with selected Strategic Partners to develop the buildings and to provide care and ongoing management to provide new Extra Care facilities across the whole of Cornwall.

The Council is excited to develop, across all major towns, new schemes that will offer both practical support and an end to the social isolation often experienced by older people living alone.  This will enable couples to stay housed together and provide support for family carers. The aim is to create vibrant and new social spaces and networks as a result of integrating these new schemes within local communities.

We welcome feedback and the opportunity to work with partners, stakeholders and communities to get the best from each development opportunity.  To kick off, we will be talking to local community stakeholders and residents to help us to assess demand and to get feedback and input into the planning and development phases. This will help us to ensure that communities get the specific solutions they need.
